It shows how inter- and intra-disciplinary approaches have become the rule for research in the social sciences today and why this tendency applies to military and conflict-resolution studies, too, not only via the use of sociology, but to the social sciences in general, and as an approach that looks at trends more than at history, these new aspects and tendencies of the social sciences in studying the military universe.
Since the end of the Cold War, military operations other than war, crisis-response operations, the fight against terrorism, and hi-tech warfare have posed for the militaries of all countries a new set of human and social challenges and problems of an intensity never before seen in peacetime. Sociology, social psychology, anthropology and the science of conflict are grappling with these issues, common to the armed forces of all countries, with a new fervor. This new book offers an update on the state-of-the-art on this theme and as an indicator of the new study trends in the field.

Containing essays by some of the most highly regarded scholars on the subject, this is essential reading for all students of civil-military relations, conflict resolution and military studies in general.

Built in 1928 to replace the campus armory. It was constructed for the department of Military Science and today still houses the ROTC program. It was also where the Spartan Hockey team played until the Munn arena was finished in 1974. Today it also serves as storage for the Spartan Marching Band, and is used for rollerhockey and indoor soccer.

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: July 9, 2007
ALBUQUERQUE, July 8 (AP) — Fred T. Saberhagen, a science fiction and fantasy writer best known for his “Berserker” series, about intelligent machines out to destroy the human race, died on June 29, 2007 at his home here. He was 77.

The cause was prostate cancer, said his son Tom.

Mr. Saberhagen, who began publishing in the 1960s, wrote 60 novels and several collections. He also edited three short-story collections and collaborated on three novels.

His 1967 book, “Berserker,” a collection of stories about giant warships invading with the intent to destroy all life, was the springboard for what became a long and popular series.

He is also known for a series of adventures written from Dracula’s point of view, said a family friend, Patricia Rogers, and for his “Swords” and “Lost Swords” stories. The latest, “Ardneh’s Sword,” was published last year.

Born and raised in Chicago, Mr. Saberhagen served in the Air Force, worked as a civilian electronics technician and wrote and edited articles on science and technology for the Encyclopaedia Britannica before moving on to fiction. He worked for the encyclopedia from 1967 to 1974.

In addition to his son Tom, of Falls Church, Va., his survivors include his wife, Joan Spicci Saberhagen; a daughter Jill, of Moriarty, N.M.; a son, Eric, of Missoula, Mont.; and seven grandchildren
